What are wax melts & how do they work?

Wax melts are an easy, mess-free alternative to candles, oil diffusers, plug-ins, and other home fragrance solutions. Wax melts are placed in a wax warmer, and warmed with a hot plate or light bulb located inside. Once the wax begins to melt, your room will be filled with fragrance.

What is cure time?

Cure time is the amount of time that needs to pass before melting your wax. Because I use soy wax in my blend, cure time is crucial to a great smelling wax melt. Soy wax is considered one of the most difficult waxes to get a good scent throw from. The chemical bonds in soy wax trap fragrance oils instead of allowing it to be readily evaporated (like straight paraffin wax in your store bought waxes allows), so the longer the melts rest and let the wax & fragrance bind, the better your melts will smell.

How long is cure time?

I recommend a minimum of at least 2 weeks from pour date. However, waitng one month or more is going to give the best results.

What are the ingredients in Emerald City wax melts and how does that make yours different from what I buy at the store?

Emerald City Wax Co. believes in a healthy and happy family and home. These melts contain a proprietary blend of natural soy wax, paraffin wax, phthalate-free fragrances and/or essential oil-infused fragrance oils, and a small amount of dye or mica. All melts are phthalate-free. By using a blend instead of straight paraffin or straight soy waxes, I can offer the benefits of both.

What are Phthalates? Why don't you use them?

All the oils used in these melts are phthalate-free.

Phthalates are industrial chemicals used to soften PVC plastic and as solvents in cosmetics and other consumer products. They can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs, and reproductive system. Many store bought waxes use oils with phthalates.

I don't want those kind of fumes in my own home for my children and pets to breathe and I sure don't want to be throwing those kinds of chemicals into landfills or sharing them with you!

How strong are the scents?

Scent sensitivity varies from person to person. The size of the rooms you're using a warmer in also affect the scent throw greatly. The type of warmers you use also have a huge influence in how the melts throw scent. Sometimes it could be as simple as changing the bulb of your warmer if using that type of warmer. The oils used can also vary in intensity. A citrus or bakery scent will throw more strongly than something like cotton or linen. These melts are loaded with the highest amount of fragrance oil possible so they last longer and travel further. A large living room may require more wax than a small bedroom or bathroom. Some people like "in your face" smells while others prefer a subtle aroma. You can achieve stronger scent by placing more wax in the warmer or create that subtle scent by cutting the melts into smaller pieces or using less. Be sure to follow your warmers instructions when it comes to how much wax you place in the dish, you don't want to overfill or burn.

How long does the scent last?

As with scent strength above, scent sensitivity can vary greatly from person to person. I have found my melts to last longest when I allow the melt to heat up enough to scent the room, then turn off my warmer for a while and repeat. If you turn your warmer off when you leave your home or at night when you're sleeping, this will also help prolong the scent of each melt. During my personal scent tests, I've found an average of about 48 hours of continuous strong scent burn time with the following 24 hours on the more subtle side. That means each ounce of wax has the potential to have 72 hours of straight burn time before you might want to dump it and put a new chunk in. If you turn your warmer off when sleeping and away from home, one ounce could last anywhere from 5 to 7 days. My store bought waxes seem to need to be changed every 8 to 12 hours for scent to be detected. There is also a phrase to keep in mind called "nose blind." This just means that you've been sitting in the room with the melt on for a while and gotten used to it. If you go outside for a few minutes or a friend comes over, y'all will be able to smell the melt.

What happens if a person or a pet ingests a melt?

The primary ingredient in these melts is non-toxic soy wax. Ingestion of these wax melts may result in the person or pet experiencing some minor gastrointestinal effects such as nausea.

In the event that wax melts are ingested, it is recommended that a physician or the Poison Control Center be contacted for treatment advice. Additionally, keep products out of the reach of children and pets, as this could be a choking hazard, and let's be honest, some of them smell pretty tasty and they shouldn't be eaten.

What kind of warmer should I use?

You can use a warmer from anywhere, really. I suggest something with a 15 watt or 25 watt warmer bulb. The 15 watt bulbs won't get nearly as hot so your wax will last longer in those but might be fainter. Because the wax I use is a blend of beeswax and soy and because soy has a lower melting and burning temp, I wouldn't recommend using any bulb over 25 watts. You can burn these in warmers from Wal-Mart, Scentsy, and others. Just be sure to check the bulbs and read and follow the instructions for your warmer. Also be mindful that some warmer warranties will be voided if you do not use that company's wax.

What types of warmers are there and what do you recommend?

There are so many types of warmers out there, really. A quick list: 15-watt plug in warmers, 25-watt bulb warmers, ceramic hot plate style warmers, fan warmers, and tea light warmers.

The breakdown:
15-watt warmers are usually the plug-in night light style warmers. Because they have a lower temp, the scent throw is going to be mild. I recommend and use these types of warmers in my bathrooms because they are smaller spaces. Using this style and watt in a smaller room, will allow that mild fragrance to fill the space better while also allowing it to last longer.

25-watt warmers are usually corded and have a removable dish. These are what I use in my larger rooms like living room, kitchen, and bedrooms. The heat they give off for melting allows a better scent throw in bigger spaces. Because they get warmer than the 15-watt styles, your wax won't last as long comparatively.

Ceramic hot plate style warmers are not my personal go-to. I've used two and they were either too hot or not hot enough and I went back to my bulb warmers. This is going to be personal preference though. A lot of times the hot plate styles run much hotter than the 25-watt bulb styles. This means they're going to burn the fragrances out of your wax very quickly. One of the hot plate warmers I had may have been defective because it took about 30 minutes to fully melt the wax and until the wax was fully melted I could not smell anything. Not MY favorite, but you might have a better one you use that you like. Upside to these are not having to change out bulbs.

Fan warmers are great if you have a space that is HUGE and/or has poor air circulation. If you have a wax warmer sitting in the corner and can't smell it unless you're on top of it with your nose in the dish, try a fan warmer. They have a small fan in them that helps circulate the fragrance in those spaces.

Tea-light warmers are not something I like. I have kids and pets in my home and I am not about those open flames when my home is usually a lot of running around and knocking things over. Some people prefer these for the ambiance. These typically have a glass bowl that is suspended over a space where a tea light will sit and heat the melt. The flame can get much hotter than the bulb and ceramic warmers so you need to exercise caution when using this method. I have also seen and heard stories of the glass bowl cracking and/or shattering if it's a cheaper model and the glass is set too close to that flame. Because these can get hotter than bulb or ceramic warmers, the scent can dissipate quicker.

When it comes, to warmers, it's all a personal preference. I prefer the 25-watt bulb style warmers. I feel these have the best heat to throw enough fragrance into the room. The 15-watt bulb warmers I love for smaller spaces like bathrooms.

How should I store my wax melts?

This is a lot of preference. I prefer to store my melts in a box with a closing lid (I use an ornament box with dividers). I recommend keeping them away from heat and light as those can cause the scent to evaporate or go stale. A closet on a high shelf would be ideal so it preserves the wax and keeps it out of reach of children and pets.

If you're going to store these in a bag, please use polypropylene to avoid scent leeching. That means Ziplock bags are a no-go.

I bought some wax and I'm having allergy issues. Now what?

Oh no! Let me know ASAP! I can look up the fragrance and see what might be causing it. Some people might be sensitive to bakery scents which usually have a lot of vanilla scent in them. Some people might not be able to handle citrus scents. This goes back to no nose is the same and scent sensitivity varies from person to person. If you have an allergy or a question about a fragrance, email me and I can look into the ingredients for you or give you a recommendation. You can email your questions to emeraldcitywaxco@gmail.com.

It's summer and hot. Is my order of wax going to melt?

I make it a priority to make sure you get what you ordered and in proper form. I also use a blend of wax that has a melt point of about 115-130 degrees Fahrenheit.

During summer months when the weather gets super warm, I will ship orders in a box filled with paper to keep the wax insulated. I will also have a keep out of heat sticker on the box. To ensure orders don't sit on a truck or in a warehouse over weekends in the heat, I will be shipping only Monday - Wednesday via USPS Priority during summer months if your order is not in my state so your items get to you in tact.

Please note, I am not responsible for wax that has melted from sitting on your porch, in your mailbox, or on the delivery truck. Remember, it will still smell amazing and was going to be melted anyway.

If your wax has gotten too soft or a little melty, you can pop them in the fridge or freezer until they harden and then store as you normally would.

I spilled wax on my beautiful carpet/counter/table/other pretty things! What do I do?!

Calm down, take a deep breath, and know it's going to be okay. What I've found works really well is to get a paper towel or sheet of paper, lay it over the COOLED wax, and use an iron or blow dryer to heat the wax onto the paper towel or piece of paper. You may need to do this a couple times to get all the wax residue up. I keep my colors pastel so the risk of any staining is minimal if at all. Be sure that the surface you're cleaning can withstand heat. Tables or furniture that have that faux rock look that use a plastic material might warp with direct and high heats. If you can't use a blow dryer or iron, you can scrape off what you can with a credit card or spatula then gently scrub it off with some dawn dish soap and a sponge. Because the wax is blended with soy wax, it's softer and easier to get up than most store-bought waxes.
